Illinois Attorney General issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued the following statement in response to a ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas granting a preliminary injunction and blocking Texas’ unconstitutional six-week abortion ban.
“Illinois and other states have already seen the impact of Texas’ unconstitutional abortion ban, as women seeking safe abortion care have been forced to travel outside Texas to other states for potentially life-saving medical care. States should not have to foot the bill for Texas’ unlawful attempt to ban abortion. More importantly, women have the right to access safe abortion care without fear of a bounty hanging over their heads.
“Senate Bill 8 threatens the safety and well-being of thousands of women, is already placing a burden on states’ health care systems and violates decades of Supreme Court precedent. I am grateful the court granted a preliminary injunction while the Department of Justice’s lawsuit is pending, and I will continue to oppose unconstitutional attacks on women’s rights to make their own reproductive and abortion decisions.”
On Sept. 15, Attorney General Raoul, as part of a coalition of 24 attorneys general filed an amicus brief supporting the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit challenging Texas’ unconstitutional six-week abortion ban. Raoul and the coalition argue that the ban, which went into effect Sept. 1, is an unprecedented attack on the rule of law.
