EDWARDSVILLE — A woman claims she was injured when she fell on steps that "gave out" at an Airbnb in Alton.

Verna Jean Cox filed a complaint Sept. 24 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Kelsi Harree and AirBNB Inc., alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Cox arrived at the defendants' Airbnb located on Aberdeen Avenue in Alton on Sept. 25, 2020. She alleges that as she exited the home to get her luggage from her car, the wooden steps on the porch "gave out" and caused her to slip and fall.

Cox claims that as a result of the fall, she suffered severe injuries including a dislocated ankle, sprain, fracture and contusions on her arm. She also claims she incurred medical expenses and suffered lost wages.

Cox claims the defendants were negligent for failing to inspect, repair and maintain the porch steps in a safe condition, failing to have adequate lighting around the steps and failing  to warn of the defects on the Airbnb premises.

Cox seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Keith Short of Keith Short and Associates PC in Alton.
