EDWARDSVILLE — A patient alleges she suffered third degree burns and other injuries after hospital staff left a hot heating pad/blanket on her torso following surgery.

Holly Swain filed a complaint Sept. 20 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Anderson Hospital, Ryan S. Diederich, M.D., and others, alleging negligence.

Swain alleges in her complaint that she underwent bilateral breast reduction surgery, abdominal suction lipectomy and abdominoplasty performed by Diederich at Anderson Hospital on Sept. 24, 2019. She claims that after her surgery, the defendants placed a heating pad/blanket on her torso and left it on too long and at too high of heat level, causing her to suffer severe burns on her torso, abdomen and breast. Swain also claims she suffered third degree burns, wounds, infection, tissue and nerve damage and scarring, which required multiple reconstruction surgeries and medical treatment.

Swain alleges the defendants were negligent for failing to monitor her post-operatively and failing to train their nurses and hospital staff.

Swain seeks monetary and all other just relief. She is represented by Gary Burger and Genavieve Fikes of Burger Law LLC in St. Louis.
