Suit alleges distracted driver failed to obey traffic signal, caused Edwardsville collision

EDWARDSVILLE — A driver who was allegedly operating his vehicle while distracted and failed to obey a traffic signal is facing a suit over a collision in Edwardsville. 

Melissa R. Barron filed a complaint Sept. 13 in the Third Judicial Circuit for Madison County against John R. Winsel, individually, USAA General Indemnity and others alleging negligence. 

According to the complaint, Barron was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling on Goshen Road in Edwardsville on Sept. 22, 2019. She claims Winsel failed to yield the right of way and crashed into the vehicle she was riding in, causing her to suffer injuries. 

Barron alleges Winsel made an improper turn, was driving while distracted and failed to obey the traffic signal. 

She claims that as a result of the crash, she suffered pain, internal and external injuries, disability, disfigurement and mental anguish. Barron also claims loss of wages and that she has incurred medical expenses. 

Barron seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Benjamin Tobin of Pratt & Tobin PC in East Alton.
