EDWARDSVILLE — A Gateway Regional Medical Center surgeon is accused of negligently suturing a patient's ureter during surgery.

Brian McKenzie filed a complaint Sept. 10 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Serge Marinkovic, M.D., and Gateway Regional Medical Center, alleging negligence.

According to his complaint, McKenzie sought care from Marinkovic at Gateway for "bilateral varicoceles" and underwent a varicocelectomy on Jan. 14, 2020. The procedure was preformed by Marinkovic. He alleges that for the next two days, he was seen at two different emergency departments for abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and difficulty urinating and was diagnosed with a left ureter occlusion.

McKenzie alleges that on Jan. 18, 2021, he underwent a laparotomy at St. Louis University Hospital to correct Marinkovic's suturing his ureter and causing an obstruction. He claims he also suffered nerve damage from Marinkovic's procedure and that he has required further treatment for complications caused by the surgery. McKenize alleges Marinkovic failed to protect his ureter during the varicocelectomy and used an abdominal approach rather than a laparoscopy or other alternatives.

McKenzie seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by Lanny Darr of The Darr Law Offices LTD in Alton.
