EAST ST. LOUIS — A St. Clair County inmate filed a pro se complaint alleging he was denied proper supplies and the ability to change his colostomy bag in a timely manner.
Shawn Sherrill filed a complaint Sept. 10 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Wexford Health Sources and others, alleging civil rights violations.
According to the complaint, Sherrill is an inmate at the St. Clair County Jail and uses a colostomy bag. He alleges the nursing staff working at the jail allow him to "have feces on his skin" and force him to clean his colostomy bag in a shared sink with 15-25 other inmates.
He claims he is only allowed to change his bag every four to seven days and is not given proper supplies such as adhesive to secure the "barrier" on the bag, allowing the feces to get on his skin. Sherrill alleges he was told to wipe and seal the end of the bag with toilet paper but is only issued one roll per week. Sherrill alleges the nursing staff's denial of his colostomy bag supplies has caused a health hazard.
Sherrill seeks monetary relief of at least $250,000 and all other just relief.
