EDWARDSVILLE — Fayette County Hospital and others are accused of failing to timely and properly treat a patient's infection led to her death.

Jennifer Whitt-Heiens, as personal representative of the Estate of Elizabeth Whitt, deceased, filed a complaint Aug. 30 in the Madison County Circuit Court against the County of Fayette, doing business as Fayette County Hospital, Heartland Health, Deidre Langston, N.P., Sarah Bush and others, alleging wrongful death.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, her sister Elizabeth Whitt was admitted to Fayette County Hospital on Aug. 24, 2019, for the treatment of sepsis. She alleges the defendants failed to properly and timely treat Elizabeth Whitt's infection, which put her at an increased risk for vertebral osteomyelitis, discitis, epidural abscess, phlegmon, paralysis and death.

The plaintiff claims the defendants failed to monitor, investigate and assess her sister's back pain, failed to recognize laboratory results that showed Whitt's Staphylococcus aureus infection and failed to order a course of intravenous antibiotics or recognize her worsening condition. The plaintiff alleges the defendants' negligent care led to Elizabeth Whitt's death on Nov. 8, 2019.

The plaintiff seeks compensation of more than $50,000, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Daniel Farroll and Jennifer Wagner of Goldenberg Heller & Antognoli PC in Edwardsville.
