Lawsuits

EDWARDSVILLE — The estate of a former Granite City nursing home patient alleges negligent care led to the patient's multiple falls, health issues and death.

Shante D. Griggs, as independent administrator of the Estate of Lisa Delois Brooks, deceased, filed a complaint Aug. 25 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC, Aurora Cares LLC, doing business as Tara Cares LLC, Maria R. Robbins, L.P.N., Raschel Morton, L.P.N., and Kimberly Hamilton, R.N., alleging wrongful death and other claims.

According to the complaint, Lisa Brooks was a resident at Stearns from Aug. 2, 2019 through Feb. 11, 2020. Griggs alleges Brooks had a history of "anoxic brain injury secondary to hypoglycemia" and had significant cognitive defects. The plaintiff claims that while under Stearns' care, Brooks suffered multiple falls, high blood glucose levels, several UTIs, sepsis, cellulitis, edema, pneumonia, colitis, septic shock, anemia, pressure ulcers and required several hospitalizations.

The plaintiff claims Brooks was transferred to another facility in February 2020 and suffered, as a result of the negligent care she received at Stearns, until her death on June 4, 2020. The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to have a proper care plan for Brooks, failed to properly assess Brook's fall risk and her other health conditions in violation of the Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Act.

The plaintiff seeks monetary and all other just relief. She is represented by Eva Golabek of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
