BELLEVILLE — A motorist claims he suffered serious injuries after a Bi-State bus driver collided with his vehicle at an intersection in Fairview Heights.

Daniel Weaver filed a complaint Aug. 17 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Bi-State Development Agency and Lashawnda Backus, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Weaver claims he was driving his Ford F-150 on Lincoln Trail near the intersection of Canty Lane in Fairview Heights on Oct. 19, 2020. He alleges that as he slowed down and stopped for a red light, Backus, who was driving a Bi-State bus, collided with his truck from the rear.

Weaver claims he suffered severe and permanent injuries from the collision, including disability and disfigurement. He also claims he incurred "large sums" for hospital, medical and other health care treatment services.

He alleges Backus was negligent for failing to operate the bus in a safe and proper manner and failing to keep the bus under control. Weaver also alleges Buckus failed to take every precaution to avoid the crash, such as slowing down, stopping or swerving, and that she was traveling at a speed greater than reasonable and proper.

Weaver seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by John Hipskind and Brady McAninch of Hipskind & McAninch LLC in Belleville.
