EDWARDSVILLE — A mother is suing Gateway Regional Medical Center and one of its physicians for allegedly failing to recognize that she was in pre-term labor and sending her home after diagnosing her with vaginal clotting and constipation.

Tyshae Graves, individually and as next of friend of minor K.G., filed a complaint July 7 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Granite City Illinois Hospital Company, doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, and Mark S. Wasserman, M.D., alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Graves, who has a history of preterm delivery, was in the second trimester of her pregnancy when she was seen by Wasserman at Gateway Regional Medical Center on July 20, 2019, due to vaginal bleeding and other "abdominal symptoms." She claims that following the exam, she was diagnosed with "benign cramping and vaginal clotting" and was discharged later that morning. Graves claims her symptoms worsened the next day and she returned to Gateway Regional, where Wasserman informed her she was passing a blood clot and had constipation.

Graves alleges she then went to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis to seek another medical opinion and was found to be in preterm labor. Physicians at Mercy were unable to stop her labor and she gave birth to K.G. prematurely.

Graves claims the defendants were negligent for failing to give her a proper exam, failing to admit her to the hospital and failing to diagnose her "imminent and grave health threat."

Graves seeks compensation of more than $50,000, trial by jury and all other proper relief. She is represented by Justin Collins of The Collins Law Firm LLC in Town & Country, Mo.
