EAST ST. LOUIS — Graphic Packaging International is facing a class action over alleged BIPA violations through required handprint scans for janitorial staff.
Jocelyn Roberts, individually and on behalf of herself and all others similarly situated, filed a complaint June 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois East St. Louis Division against Graphic Packaging International LLC, alleging violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
According to the class action, Roberts was employed by the janitorial service, ABBCO, which provided services to the defendant. Roberts worked at the defendant's Centralia facility. She claims employees were required to scan their handprint into the biometric timekeeping system for each shift. She alleges the defendant's collection of her and other employees' biometric data was in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act and done without "informed written consent."
Roberts further alleges that she and other employees and contractors were not provided disclosure on how their personally identifying information that was collected each time they clocked in and out would be stored, used and destroyed. She claims the defendant's actions put employees and contractors at risk for identity theft and other issues.
Roberts seeks monetary and all other just relief. She is represented by William Sweetman of Keogh Law LTD in Chicago.
