EDWARDSVILLE — A UPS delivery driver claims he became trapped in an Edwardsville apartment complex elevator and suffered injuries while trying to get the doors open.

Ryan Petersen filed a complaint June 29 in the Madison County Circuit Court against May Apartments LP and Madison County Housing Authority, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Petersen was working as a UPS delivery driver on April 12 and was delivering a package to a resident at the defendants' apartment complex on Bryant Avenue in Edwardsville. He alleges that he entered the elevator on the building's west end in order to deliver the package to the second floor when the elevator door did not close all the way and caused him to be trapped in the elevator. Petersen claims he attempted to pull the elevator doors open and suffered injuries to his neck, spine, shoulders and other parts of his body.

Petersen also claims that as a result of his injuries, he suffered disability, mental anguish and lost wages. Petersen alleges the defendants are negligent for failing to have a properly working elevator, failing to properly maintain, inspect and repair the elevator or provide him with assistance once he was trapped in the elevator.

Petersen seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by Edward Szewczyk of Pratt & Tobin PC in East Alton.
