EDWARDSVILLE — A woman claims she was severely injured when the vehicle she was riding in as a passenger went off the roadway and into a ditch.

Candice Graves filed a complaint June 16 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Madison L. Cofer and Michael Al Schaefer, alleging negligence.

Graves alleges in her complaint that she was a passenger in a car driven by Cofer, which was owned by Schaefer, on June 23, 2019. She claims that as they were traveling on Illinois Route 159 in Madison County, the vehicle "left the roadway and struck the ditch" on the side of road.

Graves alleges she suffered "severe" injuries, disability and lost wages. She also claims Schaefer failed to have the required insurance on the vehicle, which has left her "without recovery."

Graves alleges Schaefer knew or should have known before loaning his car to Cofer that he did not have insurance and she had been involved in previous vehicle collisions. Graves also claims Cofer was negligent for failing to keep a proper lookout, failing to keep the vehicle in her own lane of traffic and failing to use reasonable care while operating the vehicle.

Graves seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other proper relief. She is represented by Steve Selby of Smith, Mendenhall, Selby and Cole in Alton.
