EDWARDSVILLE — A tenant at an Alton apartment claims she suffered injuries when her bedroom ceiling collapsed on top of her.

Laurie Gray filed a complaint June 10 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Wendell McAfoos, Barbara McAfoos, Metro Sports Inc., Jem Properties LTD, Jem Properties and Jason McAfoos, alleging negligence.

According to her suit, Gray was living as a tenant at an apartment owned, maintained and controlled by the defendants on Mills Avenue in Alton on July 22, 2019. She alleges the ceiling in the bedroom fell on top of her and caused her to suffer injuries to her head, shoulder and neck. Gray claims the ceiling was "in a state of disrepair."

She claims the defendants negligently failed to inspect or repair the dangerous condition, failed to warn her of the hazard and failed to properly train employees in the inspection and repair of the apartment building. She further claims the defendants failed to keep the premises "in accordance with industry norms and standards" and in accordance with state and federal laws.

Gray seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Michael Glisson and Timothy Chartrand of Williamson, Webster, Falb & Glisson in Alton.
