EDWARDSVILLE — A patient's son has filed a wrongful death suit against Gateway Regional Medical physicians and others, alleging they misread his mother's CT scan and failed to diagnose her lung cancer.

Richard Witkowski, as special administrator of the Estate of Joyce Witkowski, deceased, filed a complaint June 8 in the Madison County Circuit Court against John Zabrowski, M.D., Granite City Hospital Company LLC, doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, Argyro Hatseras, M.D., Humayn Lodhi, M.D., and Granite City Clinic Corp., doing business as Gateway Medical Group, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Richard Witkowski is Joyce Witkowski's son. The plaintiff alleges the defendants misread his mother's CT scan on Dec. 6, 2016, and failed to diagnose her lung cancer. He further claims that the defendants failed to give his mother a proper physical or note her medical history and failed to follow up on her "lung mass."

The plaintiff alleges the defendants' negligent care of his mother led to her death on April 20, 2020.

The plaintiff seeks compensation of more than $75,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by Samantha Unsell of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell PC in Belleville, Richard Behr and Kelsey Farley o Evans & Dixon LLC in St. Louis, V. Scott Williams and Jared Howell of Hamilton Weber LLC in St. Charles, and Kenneth Burke and Kara Burke of Brown & James PC in Belleville.
