EDWARDSVILLE — A Madison County nursing and rehab facility and several of its staff are facing a wrongful death suit alleging a former resident suffered dehydration, renal failure and other medical issues prior to her death.

Edward Keel, as independent administrator of the Estate of Pauline Keel, deceased, filed a complaint June 1 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC, Aurora Cares LLC, doing business as Tara Cares LLC, Erica Willis, R.N., Verquantashe Jones, L.P.N. and Deanna Stewart L.P.N., alleging wrongful death.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, Pauline Keel , who suffered from "severe cognitive deficits," was a resident of Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from May 22, 2019, to June 4, 2019, and from June 10, 2019, to June 25, 2019. The plaintiffs alleges that in May 2019, Keel was diagnosed with chronic renal disease and suffered from severe dehydration with "hypernatremia." The plaintiff further alleges that in June 2019, Keel suffered renal failure and had a heel blister and "bilateral buttock maceration."

While she was at Granite Rehab, she also allegedly suffered from increased lethargy, E-coli and other medical issues. The plaintiff claims that while at Gateway Regional from June 25 through June 27, the decedent was diagnosed with septic shock, fecal impaction, a perforated gastric ulcer and intestinal perforation. The plaintiff alleges Keel died on June 27, 2019, as a result of the defendants' negligent care.

The plaintiff seeks monetary and all other just relief. He is represented by Eva Golabek of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
