EDWARDSVILLE — A man is suing the owner of an Alton bar after he was allegedly severely beaten and assaulted by intoxicated patrons.
Donald Stanton filed a complaint May 7 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Melvey's Place Inc., doing business as Melvey's Place, and John Swengrosh, alleging dram shop.
Stanton alleges in his complaint that on July 30, 2020, the defendants, who operate the bar Melvey's Place on East Broadway in Alton, allegedly sold and served alcoholic beverages to several people who became intoxicated and then "violently" assaulted Stanton. Staton claims he was the victim of a "mob action" and was punched in the body and face, hit with a barstool, billiard cues and billiard balls and suffered injuries to his neck, head, face, ribs, shoulders, chest and other parts of his body. He also claims he has incurred medical expenses as a result of his injuries, as well as disability and mental anguish.
Stanton seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, and all other just relief. He is represented by Taylor Fehrenz Williamson, Webster, Falb & Glisson in Alton.
