Nursing home resident alleges negligent care caused severe skin lesions, other injuries

Lawsuits

EDWARDSVILLE — A former resident of a Madison County long-term care facility claims he suffered negligent care, including severe skin lesions that required surgery.

Charles Johnson filed a complaint Jan. 19 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC, Aurora Cares LLC, doing business as Tara Cares, and others, alleging violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act and negligence.

According to the complaint, Johnson suffered from an "acute myocardial infarction" and was placed under the care of the defendants from March 2019 through September 2019. He claims that during that time he suffered injuries due to the defendants' negligent care, including severe skin lesions, dehydration, confusion and difficulty swallowing. He also claims his catheter was improperly placed, which allegedly led to a urinary tract infection. Johnson claims he had to be admitted to the hospital due to a "cellulitis infection" as well as for "skin breakdown."

Johnson further claims that in May 2019, he suffered from pneumonia and suffered from infected pressure ulcer wounds for months that eventually required "surgical debridements."

Johnson seeks monetary and all other just relief. He is represented by Eva Golabek of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
