BELLEVILLE — A woman is suing J.C. Penney, claiming she slipped on a paper sign that fell from the store's ceiling and suffered injuries.
Geneva Jones filed a complaint Dec. 10 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against J.C. Penney Corporation Inc., alleging negligence.
Jones alleges in her complaint that she was shopping at the J.C. Penney store in Fairview Heights on July 25, 2019. She claims that while she was at the store, her foot "came into contact with a paper type sign," which "appeared" to have come down from the ceiling. The sign allegedly caused her to slip and fall.
As a result, Jones alleges she suffered "severe and permanent" injuries, has incurred medical expenses due to the alleged incident and "sustained loss of a normal life."
She alleges J.C. Penney was negligent in failing to "properly secure the hanging sign," and for "allowing the sign to remain on the floor in an area where customers walk through." Jones also alleges J.C. Penney failed to warn of the hazard.
Jones seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Gary Bement. of BementStufflefield LLC in Fairview Heights.
