Shopper allegedly slipped at Dollar Tree due to roofing work leak

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — A woman is suing Dollar Tree, the shopping center owner and a roofing contractor after she allegedly slipped and fell on liquid that had pooled from roofing work.

Erica Steele filed a complaint Dec. 3 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dollar Tree Stores Inc., Dollar Tree Inc., Shiloh Place Shopping Center, Safeway Group Inc., S.M. Roofing LLC and Saul Martinez, alleging premises liability.

Steele alleges in her complaint that she was at the Dollar Tree Store on Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia on Dec. 31, 2018, when she allegedly she slipped and fell "on a liquid located in the store." As a result, she claims she suffered bodily injuries including injuries to her shoulder and neck. Steele further claims she required medical treatments from hospitals and physicians and suffered impaired mobility and emotional distress.

The plaintiff alleges that S.M. Roofing did structural work to the roof on the premises and failed to "ensure the work was completed." She also alleges the company failed to inspect its work to make sure it "did not create any dangerous conditions."

Steele claims Dollar Tree failed to "barricade" or "provide notice" about the alleged puddle of liquid on the floor.

She also alleges in her suit that Shiloh Place Shopping Center, which owns the shopping center where the store is located, failed to "adequately vet" Martinez and S.M. Roofing before hiring them to perform the work on the premises.

Steele seeks compensation of more than $50,000, trial by jury and all other proper relief. She is represented by Joseph Weidhaas of Goldblatt + Singer in Clayton, Mo.
