Woman alleges dangerous staircase caused her fall at Edwardsville church

Lawsuits

EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing an Edwardsville church after she allegedly fell down "defective" stairs while holding a baby.

Chassidy Miller filed a complaint Nov. 23 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Wesley Chapel AME Church.

Miller alleges in her complaint that on Dec. 2, 2018, she was walking down the basement stairs of the Wesley Chapel Church located in Edwardsville while holding a friend's eight month old baby. She claims that while walking down the staircase to get to the children's program being held in the basement of the church, she fell down and suffered "severe and permanent injuries."

Miller claims her injuries required medical treatment, including surgery.

Miller alleges the staircase was "extremely steep and narrow with undersized tread and improper handrails." She accuses the church of  negligently failing to warn of the "dangerous and defective" condition of the staircase.

Miller seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other proper relief. She is represented by Carolyn Caruthers of Sauter Sullivan LLC in St. Louis.
