Patient allegedly swallowed tooth during surgery, suffered esophagus tear

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — A patient claims she swallowed her tooth during surgery and then suffered an infection after the surgery to extract her tooth resulted in a tear to her esophagus.

Senita Glover filed a complaint Nov. 12 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Timothy Hainds, M.D., Theron Ross, CRNA, HSHS Medical Group Inc., and Aaron Greenspan, M.D., alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, Glover was under the care of Hainds and Ross on Oct. 2, 2019, when she underwent surgery. She states in her suit that during the surgery, she swallowed her tooth and then had additional surgery performed by Greenspan to remove the tooth. Glover alleges that while performing the surgery to remove her tooth, Greenspan tore her esophagus.

Glover claims Hainds and Ross were negligent for not performing "an accurate dental history preoperatively" and failing to "perform reasonable and acceptable intubation and/or extubation." She claims Greenspan was negligent in causing her esophageal tear, which caused a "life threatening infection."

Glover alleges she has suffered "severe and permanent" injuries, pain, mental anguish, disability and disfigurement as well as lost wages and medical expenses.

Glover seeks monetary relief of more than $75,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Thomas Keefe, Jr., of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell PC in Belleville.
