EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing a physician claiming the orthopedic surgery he performed was unnecessary and left her with loss of use of her upper extremity.

Candace McCormick filed a complaint Oct. 16 in the Madison County Circuit Court against John Felder, III, M.D., Washington University Physicians Illinois Inc., and Fairview Heights Medical Group SC, doing business as BJC Medical Group of Illinois, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Felder performed "various surgical procedures" on McCormick's right "upper extremity" on Oct. 18, 2018, that included carpal tunnel release, cubital tunnel release with radical sensory release, modian nerve forearm release and pin decompression, De Quevain release and ulnar nerve transposition.

She alleges the procedures were not "indicated or necessary," and the defendants failed to inform her of the risks. She also claims Felder failed to obtain a consultation from a "qualified" orthopedic surgeon and "negligently and carelessly" performed the surgery.

McCormick alleges she suffered "severe and permanent" injuries as a result of the surgery, including loss of range of motion, pain, numbness, loss of strength and loss of use due to Felder's negligence.

McCormick seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other proper relief. She is represented by Thomas Kemper of Butler & Kemper in Granite City.
