EDWARDSVILLE –  A woman claims a Gateway Regional Medical Center psychiatrist failed to properly evaluate and treat her husband, who committed suicide after he was discharged from the hospital.

Jennifer Woodside, individually and as independent Administrator of the Estate of Dustin Woodside, filed a complaint  Oct. 9 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Rahul Bansal, M.D., and Granite City Illinois Hospital Company LLC, doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Dustin Woodside was experiencing a "psychiatric emergency" on Oct. 14, 2018, including paranoia, delusions and suicidal thoughts. The plaintiffs sought treatment for him at Gateway Regional Medical Center's emergency room, where he was evaluated by Bansal, a psychiatrist.

Woodside alleges her husband was diagnosed with "acute psychotic break, acute anxiety disorder, depression, homicidal ideation and suicidal ideation." He  was prescribed an "antipsychotic medication" and then discharged.

Jennifer Woodside claims her husband then committed suicide by hanging himself shortly after he returned home from the hospital. Woodside claims Bansal failed to give her husband "an adequate" evaluation and to recommend "appropriate" treatment or outpatient care, including possible hospitalization.

Woodside seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by David Cates and Ryan Mahoney of Cates Mahoney LLC in Swansea.
