EDWARDSVILLE — A Maryville surgeon is accused of perforating a patient's stomach and gastric pouch, allegedly resulting in her death.

Richard Allen, as personal representative and executor of the Estate of Barbara Sisson, filed a complaint  Sept. 4 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Richard Wikiera DO, Anderson Hospital, Anderson Medical Group LLC, Anderson Healthcare, Dr. Giuseppe Aliperti, Midwest Therapeutic Endoscopy Consultants LLC and Missouri Baptist Medical Center, alleging wrongful death and negligence.

According to Allen's complaint, Sisson, 72, underwent a laparposcopic cholecystectomy with IOC and laparoscopic gastrotomy tube on Sept. 4, 2018, at Anderson Hospital. The procedure was performed by Wikiera.  Allen alleges that the following day, Sisson was transferred to Missouri Baptist Hospital due to "gallstones #10 gastric bypass" and that on Sept. 9, 2018, Sisson was experiencing a worsening of her abdominal pain. A CT scan showed that she had a "large amount" of "free air" around her spleen, a perforation of her "gastric pouch" and her "gastrotomy tube" had pulled out of her stomach.

Allen claims that Wikiera's perforating Sisson's stomach and gastric pouch during surgery, as well as his failure to repair or notify other medical providers of the injury, caused her to suffer additional medical procedures and led to her death on Sept. 26, 2018. He also alleges the other defendants were negligent in Sisson's care.

Allen seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by Charles Armbruster, Roy Dripps and Michael Blotevogel of Armbruster Dripps Winterscheidt & Blotevogel LLC in Maryville.
