Woman sues Rural King after falling off hammock display

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — A woman is suing Rural King after she allegedly fell and suffered injuries while attempting to sit in a hammock chair on display.

Patricia Brown filed a complaint Sept.1 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Rural King Holding Co., alleging product liability and negligence.

According to her complaint, Brown was at Rural King Holdings' retail store in Swansea on June 16. She alleges that she went to sit in a hammock chair on display in the store that was "suspended by a hammock stand." However, she claims she fell to the floor as the chair tipped over and suffered injuries.

Brown claims she "sustained personal injuries to her body," as well as disability and disfigurement as a result of the alleged fall.

She also claims she has incurred medical bills.

Brown alleges that following her visit to the store and fall, the defendants placed a sign on the hammock chair display warning customers not to sit on the chair and that it was intended to be a display.

She claims the store was negligent in failing to warn customers that the chair was for "display only" prior to her alleged accident and that the base/footing of the display was "unreasonably dangerous."

Brown seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Peter Maag of The Maag Law Firm LLC in Wood River.
