BELLEVILLE — A BJC Medical Group patient claims a physician failed to properly diagnose and treat her wound, which she claims led to an infection in her bone.
Holly Olmstead filed a complaint Aug. 3 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Herbert Biel M.D., and BJC Medical Group of Illinois, alleging negligence.
Olmstead alleges in her complaint that during a medical visit on Dec. 4, 2019, Biel failed to order testing on the drainage of her wound to determine if any bacteria was present. She also claims that on Dec. 20, 2019, Biel failed to adequately address her neck pain and failed to "perform/recommend appropriate and urgent work-up." As a result of these actions, she alleges that her infection went untreated, which eventually led her to develop Osteomyelitis.
According to her complaint, she was forced to undergo several surgeries to correct the medical issues.
Olmstead alleges that due to the negligence of Biel and BJC Medical Group, she has experienced “permanent pain, mental anguish, disability and disfigurement” from Osteomyelitis.
Olmstead claims she “has been permanently prevented from attending to her usual affairs and duties" and has lost a "substantial amount" of wages due to her injuries.
She is seeking monetary relief of more than $75,000, plus all other just relief. She is represented by Thomas Keefe, III of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell PC in Belleville.
