The Karens come out for Pritzker

Our View

Enough with the masks, the social distancing, and the sheltering in place! We need to get back to work! We want our lives back!

More and more Illinoisans are challenging Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s emergency powers. The Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce has joined the chorus of dissenters, filing suit in Madison County Circuit Court seeking declaratory judgment and injunctive relief against Pritzker’s edicts.

What’s Pritzker to do in the face of this simmering rebellion?

Cue the Karens – the self-important, morally superior (they think), utterly illogical scolds who actually like the lockdown, because it gives them so many opportunities to chastise complete strangers for venturing out in public or not wearing masks everywhere they go.

The Karens wear their masks all the time, even when they’re at home or driving alone in their cars, and anyone who isn’t as overly scrupulous as they are is going to get a piece of their narrow minds.

Health organizations are full of Karens, and they’re lining up to defend Pritzker and his economy-destroying dictates. The Illinois Health and Hospital Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American Nurses Association-Illinois, and the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing have jointly filed an Amici Curiae brief supporting Pritzker against the Chamber suit.

“Because of the seriousness of COVID-19 and the lack of sufficient testing, a vaccine, or recognized therapeutic cure, the pandemic continues to place undue strain on Illinois hospitals, health systems, physicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses, even as the state moves toward reopening,” the group’s brief contends.

“The Governor’s executive orders, which are consistent with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC), have undoubtedly helped to ‘flatten the curve.’ However, a TRO or other injunction enjoining their enforcement or abandoning the measured, science-based plan to reopen Illinois will increase the risk to all Illinoisans and the stress on already burdened Illinois hospitals, physicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses.”

Karens make absurd, unfactual assertions like those above and then get incensed when they’re ignored.
