BELLEVILLE – A woman living in a St. Clair County Housing Authority apartment in Marissa filed a lawsuit against the agency claiming she was injured after slipping on sewage water that had seeped into her apartment.
Wanda Anderson, who lives in an apartment on East 8th Street in Marissa, filed the suit in St. Clair County Circuit Court accusing the housing authority of negligence. She claims she suffered extensive injuries, including a broken left femur, after slipping and falling on "sewage water that had backed up into her apartment" in July 2018.
Her lawsuit claims the sewage water backed up because there was a fault in the design of the sewage system and an obstruction in the system. The lawsuit also alleges housing authority management knew about the problems with the system and had been told about the problems previously.
The lawsuit states that the housing authority, agents and employees of being negligent "due to omissions." Specifically, the plaintiff accuses the defendant of "failing to properly respond to complaints of the residents" regarding the sewage back up.
Further, the suit states that the housing authority failed to warn Anderson of "such dangerous conditions" driven by the problems with the sewage system.
The St. Clair County Housing Authority said it could not make any comment on pending litigation when contacted by the Record.
In her lawsuit, Anderson claims she was left with one or more of injuries that left her "sick, sore, lame, disordered." She suffered "extensive injuries" to her body and limbs, including the broken femur, and to her cervical, shoulder and lumber areas.
Anderson seeks a judgment in her favor in excess of $50,000, plus costs. She is represented by John Hustava of Collinsville.
