Mayer Brown announced that partner and Director of Diversity & Inclusion Jeremiah DeBerry (New York) and Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Charles E. Harris, II (Chicago) were named to Lawyers of Color’s inaugural list of “Nation’s Best” in the Eastern and Midwest regional categories, respectively. The list recognizes leading attorneys with a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.
As the Director of Diversity & Inclusion at Mayer Brown, Mr. DeBerry ensures that the firm strives to fulfill its commitment to enhancing diversity in the legal profession. In this capacity, he oversees all aspects of the firm’s efforts to recruit, hire, develop and promote diverse and women lawyers. He is also responsible for the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion policies for all of the firm’s US offices. Before joining Mayer Brown in 2013, Mr. DeBerry served as the director of diversity and inclusion for almost seven years at a major New York City-based law firm and was the president of the National Attorney of Color Network, an organization that serves as a resource for legal employers seeking to establish a diverse workforce. In addition, Mr. DeBerry was previously a partner in the corporate group of an international law firm, where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments and the sports and entertainment industries. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as an editor on the Virginia Law Review.
Mr. Harris focuses his practice on a range of matters related to the business community, including class actions, arbitration agreements, contract and real estate disputes, administrative actions, and privacy and cybersecurity. He has also handled many First Amendment cases alleging defamation and other privacy torts. In addition, as a registered patent attorney, he has litigated IP disputes. Mr. Harris represents clients in both federal and state courts at the trial and appellate levels. Before joining Mayer Brown nearly 15 years ago, Mr. Harris served as a law clerk to the late Judge David D. Dowd Jr. of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He received a BS in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MS in biology summa cum laude from North Carolina Central University, and his JD summa cum laude from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. While in law school, Mr. Harris was an editor of the Cleveland-Marshall Law Review.
Lawyers of Color is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting diversity in the legal profession and advancing democracy and equality in marginalized communities. It celebrates attorneys of color and conducts research and studies regarding the intersection of the legal profession and social justice.
