BENESCH LAW: Benesch Continues Rapid Growth, Announces Hire of Patent Attorney Jim Collins

Benesch Law issued the following announcement on March 08.

As Benesch continues to recruit top-notch legal talent from around the nation, the firm is pleased to announce that James A. Collins has joined the firm’s Innovations, Information Technology, and Intellectual Property (3iP) Practice Group, and Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group as a partner.

Collins’ diverse practice includes patent prosecution in the electrical engineering area, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office controversies, and the litigation of patent infringement cases. Drawing upon his own past career experience as an electrical engineer, he represents government, research and corporate clients that are leaders in cell phone, automotive, Internet, insurance, energy and medical software innovation.

“Jim headed the electrical engineering patent practice at one of the largest and most respected IP firms in Chicago before deciding to join Benesch. With the substantial growth of our practice in the electrical arts in both litigation and prosecution, Jim will be a significant addition to a growing practice. And with the establishment of our new office in San Francisco, Jim will be invaluable in terms of assisting our technology clients in Silicon Valley, “ said Michael Stovsky, Chair of the 3iP Group.

“We’re excited to be bringing such an outstanding attorney to our intellectual property practice,” said Kal Shah, Chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. “Jim has represented market-leading clients across a variety of industries, and, like his clients, he is someone with a talent for innovative thinking. He’s always looking for what the next great technology is going to be -- and strategizing about how to help its creators protect their investments in it.”

Collins collaborates closely with his clients, taking a business-minded approach to critical decisions, such as when to seek patents and when to take action to defend them.

The hiring of Collins reflects continued momentum for Benesch, which has been growing aggressively in Chicago and expanding its national footprint as part of a strategic plan launched by the firm’s Managing Partner Gregg Eisenberg in 2015.

In all, more than 70 attorneys have joined the firm in the last 18 months, which has also seen the opening of a San Francisco office and the expansion of practices including class action litigation, intellectual property litigation and labor and employment. Since making its debut on the AmLaw 200 list in 2016, the firm has advanced 15 places and is currently ranked at number 180.

Collins graduated magna cum laude from the Marquette University Law School in 1996 and from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1985.
