Motorist alleges East St. Louis mayor failed to yield, caused collision

Car accident 30

BELLEVILLE – A St. Louis woman alleges East St. Louis Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks failed to yield, causing a collision on Macklin Avenue.

Nicole Lujan filed a complaint on Jan. 16 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Jackson and the City of East St. Louis, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Lujan alleges that on Jan. 23, 2017, she was driving eastbound on Oakland Avenue near the intersection of Macklin Avenue in St. Louis. The plaintiff alleges her vehicle was struck as Jackson failed to yield to a green light.

As a result, Lujan claims she sustained bodily injuries, suffered disability, experienced pain and lost money for medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges Jackson failed to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles, failed to keep her vehicle under proper control, failed to apply the brakes of her vehicle and failed to yield to the right of way to oncoming traffic.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment in an amount of more than $50,000 and for such other relief as the court deems just and proper.

She is represented by Kirk A. Caponi of Williams, Caponi & Associates PC in Belleville.
