Former East St. Louis High School football player seeks damages over alleged head injuries

EDWARDSVILLE – A former high school varsity football player alleges his head injuries were caused by a defective helmet.

Demond Hunt Jr. filed a complaint on Oct. 10 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against East St. Louis School District 189, East St. Louis Senior High School, Darren Sunkett, Schutt Holdings Inc. and Curt Smith Sporting Goods Inc., alleging willful and wanton misconduct and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was on the East St. Louis Senior High School football team in 2007 and 2008. The suit states that during a game on Oct. 3, 2008, he sustained serious and permanent head injuries allegedly caused by a defective helmet.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to warn against the dangerous conditions of failing to properly maintain equipment.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount that exceeds $50,000 and any further relief the court grants.
