Man alleges wife died from incorrect medication dosage

Medical malpractice 05

BELLEVILLE — A man claims his wife died from a pulmonary embolism after she was allegedly given an incorrect dosage of medication.

Mark Buttimer, as special administrator of the estate of Sarah Buttimer, deceased filed a complaint on Oct. 10 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against James Dalla-Riva, M.D., Thomas Hulsen, M.D., and Supervalu Pharmacies, alleging failure to properly treat and care for the decedent.

According to the complaint, Buttimer alleges that on Aug. 1, his wife suddenly died when she suffered a pulmonary embolism while under the defendants' care.

As a result, Buttimer claims he was permanently deprived of her love, companionship, society and support and become liable for large sums of money in hospital expenses.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to explain the thromboembolic risk of utilising desogestrol/estradiol to the patient and dispensed the recommended quantity/dosage of the medicine without questioning the prescription of the prescriber.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment in an amount greater than $75,000, plus costs.

He is represented by Thomas Q. Keefe of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell, PC in Belleville.
