EAST ST. LOUIS — A man is suing a debt collector for allegedly attempting to collect on a nonexistent debt.

Ronald G. Brummet III filed a complaint on Feb. 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Snyder and Associates, LLC, alleging the debt collector violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

According to the complaint, Brummet alleges the defendant attempted to collect a nonexistent debt and failed to send the consumer a 30-day validation notice within five days of the initial communications. Brummet claims that the unfair debt collection practices caused him to fear his bankruptcy had not absolved him of his pre-bankruptcy debt obligation.

As a result, the plaintiff alleges he suffered out of pocket expenses and emotional distress.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks actual and statutory damages, attorney fees, costs and for any such other and further relief the court may deem just and proper.

He is represented by Travis W. Cohron of Barker Hancock and Cohron in Noblesville, Ind.
