Disabled man alleges employer violated civil rights

BELLEVILLE — A disabled employee is suing The Alton & Southern Railway for allegedly failing to provide appropriate accommodations.

Benjamin Schwoebel filed a complaint on Nov. 7, in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against The Alton & Southern Railway Co., alleging violation of his civil rights.

According to the complaint, Schwoebel alleges his employer would not provide him with reasonable accommodations for his disability and would not allow him to return to work.

As a result, he claims he sustained injuries and damages resulting in loss of wages, loss of career opportunities, humiliation and anxiety.

Schwoebel alleges his employer violated the Illinois Human Rights Act.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages, plus interest, attorney's fees, costs and all other relief deemed just and equitable. He is represented by Ryan M. Furniss of The Furniss Law Firm LLC in St Louis, Missouri.
