Woman says fellow motorist caused collision

Car accident 42

BELLEVILLE — A driver is suing a fellow motorist, alleging negligence and insufficient measures taken to prevent injuries.

Deborah Hastings filed a complaint on Oct. 18 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dennis Cordevant, alleging that he negligently failed to maintain proper control of his vehicle.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 4, she was lawfully operating her 2008 Mercury Mariner in a northbound direction on Old Collinsville Road in Fairview Heights when the defendant's vehicle struck the rear of her vehicle, causing her to sustain serious injuries to her body that resulted in great pain and mental anguish, disability, lost wages and medical expenses.

The plaintiff holds Cordevant responsible because he allegedly failed to reduce speed or take evasive actions to avoid the collision, failed to keep careful lookout and carelessly operated his vehicle in an unsafe manner.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendant in a sum exceeding $50,000, plus costs of this suit. She is represented by Steven E. Katzman of Katzman & Sugden LLC in Belleville.
