Guardians allege healthcare providers failed to give blood pressure tests and medication

Medical malpractice 06

EDWARDSVILLE — A Madison County couple is suing Alton health care providers, alleging they negligently failed to administer blood pressure tests and medication to their daughter.

Raymond Kidwell, Mae Kidwell of Maryville, as guardians of Rayelynn A. Kidwell, filed a lawsuit Aug. 8 in Madison County Circuit Court against registered nurses Laurie X. Hopper, Diane M. Eastman, Emily N. Dugger, and Alton Memorial Hospital, alleging breach of duty and negligence in failing to monitor their patient.

According to the complaint, on Dec. 1, 2014, Rayelynn Kidwell was diagnosed with eclampsia, and was given Hydralazine and Labetalol, due to continuously elevated blood pressure. While in the defendants' care at Alton Memorial, her neurological condition changed and Kidwell suffered a hypertensive hemorrhagic stroke.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants failed to administer blood pressure tests and medications as directed by physicians, failed to properly monitor the patient and failed to notify physicians of their failure to monitor blood pressure.

The plaintiffs seek a trial by jury, judgment of more than $50,000 against each defendant and all relief the court deems proper and just. They are represented by attorney William R. Tapella of Tapella & Eberspacher in Mattoon.
