Worker accuses Bechtel of firing him in retaliation for filing work comp claim

A St. Clair County man says he was fired from his job at a Marissa construction company after filing a workers' compensation claim.

Patrick Santen filed a lawsuit against Bechtel Construction Nov. 14 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

According to the complaint, Santen worked for Bechtel Construction and was hurt on the job in March 2009. Santen says he was able to return to work, with restrictions, after doctors released him. He says he filed for workers' compensation benefits in September 2010.

Santen claims he was fired in May 2011 in retaliation for filing the workers' compensation claim. The man accuses Bechtel of wrongful termination and violating Illinois Workers' Compensation Act. He asks for more than $100,000 in damages for loss of income, benefits and court costs.

Attorney Eric Kirkpatrick of Belleville represents Santen.
