Swimmer sues over loss of lower leg; Claims she was served alcohol as minor

A woman has filed suit against a couple who she claims hosted a party where she sustained injuries that caused her to lose her leg.

Bradie Ann Corcoran claims she attended a party at Mark M. and Margaret M. Berry’s home in the 500 block of Arrowhead Lane in Litchfield, Ill., on June 30 where she was served alcohol, even though she was only 17 years old at the time.

At about 10 p.m., Corcoran decided to swim across open water behind the Berrys’ home. While swimming, however, Corcoran was struck by a passing pleasure boat, according to the complaint.

In turn, Corcoran was forced to have her lower left leg amputated, suffered physical pain and mental anguish and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

Corcoran blames the Berrys for causing her injuries, saying they negligently supplied her alcohol, caused her to become impaired and allowed the consumption of alcohol on their property.

In her complaint, Corcoran is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

She will be represented by Daniel P. Cusack and Thomas M. Watson of Cusack, Gilfillann and O’Day in Peoria.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-1822.
