A St. Clair County woman has filed suit against the YMCA in Belleville after she claims she was struck by a vehicle while participating in a triathlon.

Andria J. Powers claims she was riding her bike west on Douglas Road in St. Clair County on Sept. 25, 2010, while participating in the YMCA Sprint Triathlon. Suddenly, Estelle Mueth, who was driving in the same direction on the road, struck Powers's bike, according to the complaint filed Sept. 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Because of the collision, Powers suffered severe physical injuries, experienced pain and suffering and lost her enjoyment of life, the suit states. She also lost wages and incurred medical costs, the complaint says.

Powers's husband lost his wife's society, consortium, companionship, love, affection, support and care due to the incident, he claims.

In her complaint, Powers blames the YMCA of Southwest Illinois for causing her injuries, saying it negligently failed to properly warn motorists of the presence of people participating in the triathlon, failed to place safeguards along the route, failed to provide safety vehicles to shield participants, failed to provide adequate signage warning the public of the triathlon and failed to provide safe conditions for the triathlon.

In her three-count complaint, Powers is seeking a judgment of more than $150,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

She will be represented by D. Todd Matthews of O'Fallon.
