Broken steps cause injured back, suit claims

The landlord of an Alton rental property is accused of not fixing the home's front steps which allegedly caused an injury to the tenant.

Tisha Cooper filed a lawsuit against Eric F. Pope Sept. 10 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Cooper rented a single family home on the 900 block of Vista Avenue from Pope, according to the complaint. Cooper says she informed Pope of the need to repair the front steps of the home several times and, at some point, allegedly attempted to fix the problem herself. However, on Feb. 27 Cooper claims she hurt her back, right leg and hands when the steps allegedly broke while she was walking on them.

Cooper is suing Pope for negligence for allegedly failing to repair the steps in a proper manner. She asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills and court fees.

Attorney Richard G. Reed of Belleville represents Cooper.
