A woman has filed suit against her doctor, alleging the doctor perforated her uterus twice during a surgery, causing her to undergo an unnecessary hysterectomy.
Laura and Dallas Gill claim defendant Dr. Anne Doll-Pollard diagnosed Laura Gill with abnormal uterine bleeding. According to the complaint filed Aug. 20 in Madison County Circuit Court, Doll-Pollard agreed to perform a procedure called an ablation, which consists of chipping away at the surface of an organ to remove material.
However, during the ablation on Oct. 26, 2011, Doll-Pollard perforated the uterus twice, caused injuries to Laura Gill's small bowel and failed to inspect the area to discover the perforations before closing Laura Gill's wound, the suit states.
As a result, Laura Gill was forced to undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy and developed an inflammation of her peritoneum, which lines the abdominal wall, the complaint says. She also claims she experienced pain and suffering, incurred medical costs, suffered from a decreased enjoyment of life and sustained a decreased earning capacity.
Because of the incident, Dallas Gill suffered from a decrease in his wife's society and support, the suit states.
In addition to Doll-Pallard, the Gills name Southern Obstetrics and Gynecologic Associates as a defendant. Doll-Pollard worked for the organization when the incident occurred, according to the complaint.
In their four-count complaint, the Gills seek a judgment of more than $200,000.
