Route 4 accident blamed on unsafe driver

Kolker

A driver who says he was hurt in a crash is suing the estate of a woman who allegedly turned in front of him and caused the collision.

William E. Graveline filed the complaint July 26 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the special representative of the estate of Denise L. Settles.

The alleged crash happened on Feb. 4, 2011 near the intersection of Illinois State Route 4 and Illinois State Route 13. Graveline says he was driving north on Route 4 and that Settles was driving west on Route 13. Graveline contends Settles turned her vehicle into the path of his, causing the two cars to collide.

Graveline accuses Settles of negligence for allegedly driving at an excessive speed, failing to keep a proper lookout, turning into the intersection in an unsafe manner and failing to brake or take an evasive action to avoid the crash.

Graveline says the force of the impact caused him to "be tossed with force and violence within the vehicle," causing him painful injuries. He is asking to be paid more than $50,000 in damages for medical expenses and a reduced earning capacity.

Attorney Chris Kolker of Belleville represents Graveline.
