Shop Vac sued by man claiming ejected metal piece caused vision loss

A St. Clair County man says he lost vision in his eye after a piece of metal was ejected from a vacuum and hit him in the face.

Daniel Bauer filed a lawsuit July 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Shop Vac Corporation.

Bauer was visiting Matthew and Bridget Cauble at their home in the Village of Millstadt in August 2010, according to the complaint. While he was there, Bauer says Bridget began using a Shop Vac Ultra Plus wet/dry vacuum, model number 87M300. Bauer claims a piece of metal was ejected from the vacuum and hit him in the eye. Bauer says he completely lost his vision in that eye as a result of those injuries.

Bauer, who sued the Caubles in January 2011 for negligence related to the same injury, accuses the Shop Vac Corporation of manufacturing a defective product which allowed collected materials to become projectiles. He alleges the company is liable for the loss of vision in his eye and asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills, loss of income and court fees.

Attorney Grey Chatham of Belleville represents Bauer.
