A Fairview Heights man says he was shot several times while shopping at a convenience store in East St. Louis.

Avery A. Murray filed a lawsuit against Crown Food Inc. July 17 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

According to the complaint, Murray was a customer at the Crown Food Mart on State Street in July 2010 when he was shot by another patron. Murray says he was shot in the back, leg and pelvis.

He claims Crown Food was negligent for not maintaining a safe place for customers to shop and for not taking reasonable measures considering the alleged prior incidents of violence at the convenience store. Murray asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills, loss of income and costs of the lawsuit.

Attorney Dominic Kujawa of Belleville represents Murray.
