Injured worker says she was terminated after filing work comp claim

A Swansea care facility is accused of firing one of its employees after she was hurt twice on the job.

Patti Vardiman filed a lawsuit July 17 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Parents and Friends of the Specialized Living Center.

Vardiman says she worked for Specialized Living Center and was injured on the job in December 2010 and March 2011. She contends she filed a claim for workers' compensation on both incidents. Vardiman alleges she was fired in May 2011 in retaliation of filing those claims.

Vardiman claims the care center violated Illinois' Workers' Compensation Act and asks for more than $100,000 in damages for wrongful termination, loss of income and benefits and court costs.

She is represented by attorney Kevin Boyne of Belleville.
