Gateway Regional named in med mal complaint over abscess issue

A Madison County woman accuses a Granite City hospital of mistreating an abscess during a visit to the emergency room.

Michelle Niehaus filed a lawsuit June 25 in Madison County Circuit Court against Granite City Illinois Hospital Company LLC, doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center. Dr. David L. Bogolub also is named as a defendant.

According to the complaint, Niehaus went to the Gateway Regional Medical Center emergency room in July 2010 for an abscess on her inner thigh.

Niehaus says she was put under the care of Dr. Bogolub who proceeded to cut away the damaged tissue around the abscess. However, Niehaus alleges Dr. Bogolub debrided too much tissue and left her with an infection that required numerous visits to the hospital to remedy.

Niehaus accuses the hospital and the doctor of negligence and asks for an unspecified amount of money in damages for medical expenses and court costs.

She is represented by attorney John J. Hopkins of Alton.
