Dollar General blamed for woman's slip on ice

A Madison woman says she hit her head on pavement when she slipped on ice outside the front door of a discount store.

Joeanne Schenk filed a lawsuit June 21 in Madison County Circuit Court against DG Retail LLC, doing business as Dollar General.

Schenk says the alleged injury happened when she was visiting the Dollar General on McCambridge Avenue in January 2011. As she stepped onto the walkway in front of the store, Schenk alleges she slipped on ice. The woman says the ice had been allowed to form from a gutter that drained water directly onto the sidewalk. Schenk claims she hit her head on the sidewalk when she fell.

Schenk is suing DG Retail for negligence for allowing the ice to form outside its store without warning customers of its danger. She asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills and court fees.

Attorneys Bill T. Walker and Erin M. Doyle of Granite City and James Parrot of St. Louis represent Schenk.
