Belleville Public Library blamed in suit over woman's trip on computer cords

Zimmer

A woman claims she tripped on computer cords while a patron at a public library in Belleville.

Valerese Smith filed a lawsuit June 11 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the city of Belleville.

In her complaint, Smith alleges she tripped on computer wires as she was visiting the public library in Belleville on Jan. 10.

Because of her fall, Smith sustained serious injuries, incurred medical costs, experienced great pain and suffering and became disabled and disfigured, according to the complaint. She also lost income and her ability to enjoy life, the suit states.

Smith blames the city for causing her to fall, saying it negligently created a dangerous condition by constructing an improperly designed computer station and allowed the dangerous condition to remain on its premises.

In her complaint, Smith seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Patricia A. Zimmer of Ripplinger and Zimmer in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-317.
